Mitchell Classical Design was hired to do the renovation of the Sisters of Life convent in Washington, DC. The project includes a complete redesign of the existing Chapel and Sacristy, new stained glass windows, coordination of liturgical elements, a new kitchenette and parlors on the 1st floor, and other updates throughout the basement, 1st floor, and 2nd floor.
While working at Franck & Lohsen Architects from 2014 to 2023, Gracia Mitchell oversaw the Revit
development of several church projects, in which she was specially involved in the design and
selection of Liturgical Furnishings. She was an integral part of the projects shown below:
As the Project Manager of the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine, Gracia oversaw the design and development of this 2,000-seat church, focusing on the exterior and interior of the building, its liturgical furnishings, and the detailed elements throughout the church.
Influenced by Latin American architecture and the rich traditions of the Hispanic culture, the Shrine is an authentic Spanish Mission style church with a hint of Baroque. The beautiful chapel, which is the final resting place of Blessed Stanley Rother, makes this a truly unique and special place of pilgrimage.
These sketches are an example of the initial part of our design process. After meeting with the client, we come up with several sketches to capture some ideas. In this case, we created a 3D-model of the Chapel and did multiple sketches over the Sanctuary to show different styles and configurations. After reviewing them with the client, the preferred option (or a combination of options) gets more refined and starts to become a detailed working drawing.
Our goal is to design beautiful liturgical elements that will complement sacred spaces. We can design furnishings in different styles, sizes, and levels of décor, according to the style and scale of a project. We work closely with craftsmen and artisans to create beautiful pieces for each unique project.
